Apprenticeship Models: How Craft Skills Actually Get Transferred Today

Formal apprenticeship is one of the oldest documented ways to transfer a skill, and yet the version operating today looks meaningfully different depending on which country, trade, and institution is running it. Some structures trace back centuries and still run largely unchanged. Others were built within the last decade specifically to solve a modern labor shortage. Both count as formal apprenticeship. Neither works quite like the other.

What actually makes an apprenticeship “formal”

A formal apprenticeship, as distinct from the informal, family- or community-based transmission covered in our piece on how communities pass down skills without a classroom, involves a defined term of training, an explicit teaching relationship recognized by some outside body, and typically a credential or formal recognition at the end. That structure exists to solve a specific problem informal transmission cannot: portability. A credential earned through a formal apprenticeship travels with the apprentice to a new employer, a new region, even a new country, in a way that reputation built purely within one community does not.

The guild model still operating today: Compagnons du Devoir

France’s Compagnons du Devoir, an organization of craftspeople with roots traced to medieval guilds of stonemasons and carpenters who built the country’s cathedrals, still runs one of the most structurally demanding apprenticeship models in active use. Training runs three to ten years depending on the trade chosen, built around the Tour de France, a rotation where apprentices spend six months to a year working under a different master craftsperson in a different location before moving on. The organization was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010, itself an unusual case of an apprenticeship system being recognized as heritage in its own right, not just the crafts it teaches. Its trades span roughly thirty disciplines across wood, stone, textiles and leather, metal, and food.

The government-backed model: registered apprenticeship programs

The United States runs a different structure entirely: Registered Apprenticeship, overseen by the Department of Labor and state partners, which enrolled roughly 940,000 participants in fiscal year 2024, with about 680,000 active apprentices at any given point, a 114% increase over the 2014 figure. Completions grew even faster over that decade, rising 143% to nearly 112,000 graduates a year. Construction remains the dominant industry within this system, though the registered model also covers a wide range of skilled trades beyond it. Unlike the guild model, which centers on a single organization’s own internal standards, the registered apprenticeship model works through employer sponsors and government-recognized standards, meaning any qualifying employer can register a program rather than only a small number of historic institutions.

The stages a formal apprenticeship usually moves through

  1. Placement with a sponsoring master, employer, or institution recognized by the governing body.
  2. Structured skill-building, often moving from supervised basic tasks toward independent, judgment-driven work.
  3. Assessment against a defined standard, whether an internal guild benchmark or an external certification exam.
  4. Credentialing, granting a portable qualification recognized beyond the original training relationship.

Why the credential matters more than it might seem

A skeptic might reasonably ask why the paperwork matters if the underlying skill is identical either way. The answer is mostly economic. A credential lets an employer who has never met an apprentice trust their competence without personally verifying it, which is exactly the trust problem informal, reputation-based transmission cannot solve once a maker wants to work somewhere their name carries no history. Where formal apprenticeship still falls short

The structural weakness of every formal model is the same one informal transmission solves almost by accident: cost. A sponsor, whether a guild, a government program, or a scholarship trust, has to fund an apprentice’s wage or living costs for years before that apprentice becomes fully productive, and that funding gap is the single biggest reason formal apprenticeship numbers in any craft rarely keep pace with actual demand for skilled workers in that trade. Scale is the other honest limit: a rotational model like the Tour de France produces deeply skilled craftspeople, but slowly, and cannot be sped up without compromising exactly the depth of exposure that makes it work.

How this fits alongside newer educational efforts

Formal apprenticeship is not the only structured path into craft skill today.
